A church opened its doors to all creatures great and small in its first pet service.
St Andrew’s in West Tarring held its first ever “pet” service, welcoming residents to bring along their furry friends to mark the feast of St Francis of Assisi.
Rector, Fr Steven Emerson said: “St Francis is famous for being a friend of animals and the environment. The church is rediscovering him and his love of animals as questions about nature and the environment have become more topical.”
The service, which took place on October 6, attracted plenty of new faces to the church. Around 30 dogs joined their owners as well as a cat and even a tortoise.
Fr Steve said: “They were very well behaved. I was prepared for chaos but didn’t need to turn my microphone up.”
The congregation sang “animal-themed” hymns before the pets queued up for a blessing.
Fr Steven said: “It’s about giving thanks for their companionships, the role they play in our lives and the blessings they give us.”
