A railway station café which once served a bacon sandwich to Princess Diana is vying to be voted Britain’s best railway station business.
The Runaway Café in Lewes railway station is one of 48 station businesses vying to be crowned the winner of this year’s World Cup of Stations.
Organised by the Rail Delivery Group on behalf of train companies, The World Cup of Stations is an annual competition which celebrates the importance of rail and its role in supporting communities, businesses and the economy.
This year’s focus is on the businesses that make stations vital community hubs, driving local economies.
The Runaway Café has been owned since 1988 by Jaqueline Elsey and is a favourite stop for travellers. It opens each weekday morning and is famous for its legendary bacon sandwiches—once ordered by the late Princess Diana in 1988 on her way back from opening a new magistrates court in Friars Walk.
The competition will see the public vote for the station with the best local businesses in stations across England, Scotland and Wales.
