A seafront Grade II listed hotel is set to get new rooms and a restaurant.

Worthing Borough Council has approved the plans for The Burlington Hotel in Marine Parade, Worthing, which will add 18 new rooms, an improved reception and entrance and expanded kitchen facilities.

According to the planning documents, a former tea room, which is attached to the hotel and now used as a dance hall, will be demolished to make room for the four-storey extension and facilities.

The plans state: “The proposals seek to greatly improve the ability to access The Burlington Hotel through the creation of a new main entrance that faces onto Marine Parade.

“The design, as previously consented, seeks to retain the façade to the former tea room which will be the new main entrance to the hotel.

“This is level to Marine Parade enabling access for all guests. The current main entrance requires climbing a set of steps to reach the reception and no lift provision exists or can be practically retro-fitted within these areas of the hotel without significant loss of space to a restaurant or function room.”

The new lobby will also include disabled toilets.

The Burlington Hotel, built in 1864, is said to be the oldest hotel in Worthing.
