A busy pier has been forced to shut amid fears it is unsafe - with officials warning boaters to stay away.

Engineers have sealed off Worthing Pier for the first time in more than 25 years after discovering damage to one of the pier's supports.

They fear - with strong winds forecast - that people fishing or making the most of the sea air on its deck could be at risk.

Contractors will be brought in next week when the tide is lower, on October 15 to start repairs, with the work taking several days in good weather conditions.

A council spokesman said: "In the meantime, watercraft including boats and paddleboards must not go under the pier. The council has contacted local fishermen and harbour authorities about this.

"The council is grateful for everyone’s patience while the repairs take place, in particular the pier businesses and their staff. Although the closure is frustrating, keeping everyone safe has to come first. "

Among those affected is the busy Perch restaurant on the end of the pier, which has been forced to shut and cancel some events at short notice.

The pier opened on April 12, 1862 - designed as a landing stage for boats but in 1889 a pavilion was erected on the pier head.
