Three budding ballerinas were in tears at the end of a “magical experience” performing in the Northern Ballet’s production of Romeo and Juliet.

Arno Knight, 7, Rosie Banks, 8, and Tilly Levett, 9, pupils at The Boathouse Ballet School in Arundel, appeared as street urchins in the Northern Ballet’s production of Romeo and Juliet.

The production, which is currently touring around the UK, ran for five performances at The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. Eagle-eyed teacher and school owner Emily Francis noticed that while performing in London, the production featured pupils from local ballet schools. After contacting the company and asking if they needed children for the Southampton run, she was invited to put three children forward.Arno celebrated his 8th birthday during the runArno celebrated his 8th birthday during the run (Image: Supplied)

Emily said: “At the start of the ballet, a little child dies, and a woman screams and sobs over her body so the production wanted a child who would be small enough to be picked up but have the emotional maturity and acting skills for the role. Tilly, who we call “tiny Tilly” was perfect for the role.”

After some preparation at The Boathouse, the children were whisked through a dress rehearsal before a busy schedule of five shows over three days.

Emily said: “They had to be really switched on because there wasn’t much time to rehearse. They did us so proud – they were so professional and picked up on what was required of them straightaway.”

Arno celebrated his eighth birthday during the run and was looked after by the company, who made sure there were cakes and bunting.

Emily said: “They absolutely adored the experience. All the dancers were so lovely and looked after them. They were in tears on the last night – they wanted to run away with the company. It was a magical experience.”
