Multiple flood alerts are in place after the county was battered by rain overnight.

A yellow weather warning was in place this morning until 9am, while yesterday, the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (Torro) warned the county could be hit by brief tornadoes, hail and gusty winds of up to 50 mph, although none materialised.

Now, the Environment Agency has issued four flood alerts following today’s “intense rainfall” which has caused a rise in water levels.

It has warned that Crowhurst will continue to see flooding of its fields, roads and gardens of homes between the Plough public house and the junction of Sampsons Lane on Sandrock Hill as the Powdermill Stream has “peaked”.

Minimal flood impacts are also expected to impact Bexhill Road recreation ground, while the Combe Haven river is expected to return to normal this evening.

Flooding near the Cuckmere river is also expected “following 20mm of rain in only a few hours” this morning, impacting Mill Lane and Grove Hill near Grovebridge Farm in Hellingly, near Hailsham.

Station Road, Church Lane and Church Road could also be affected, while fields, gardens and roads near North Street and Deans Place Hotel, Alfriston, may experience flooding after 2pm.

Other areas which could see flooding include:

  • River Adur- fields and gardens at Mock Bridge, near Shermanbury
  • River Uck- fields, rural roads, and gardens in Buxted, Uckfield, and Isfield

The Environment Agency also expects “a month’s worth of rain” to fall on the evening of Sunday, September 29, and has warned of further flooding impact.
