A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash with a van.

Emergency services attended the incident involving a blue Yamaha and a white Ford Transit Connect on the A27 westbound at Clapham, near Worthing, at about 5.17pm on Monday.

The motorcyclist, a 20-year-old man from Worthing, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remains at this time.

The van driver, a 62-year-old man from Waterlooville in Hampshire, was uninjured.

Firefighters attended the crash alongside Sussex Police and paramedics.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “Yesterday at 5.19pm we were called to a road traffic collision involving a van and a motorcycle on the A27 Westbound between Hammerpot and Clapham Common.

“Joint fire control mobilised two fire engines from Worthing and one from East Preston to the scene.

“Firefighters made the scene safe and assisted Sussex Police and paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service who were also in attendance.

“The road was closed in both directions for the arrival of the air ambulance and to allow crews to work safely.

“The crews left the scene at 7pm.”

A section of the road was closed for several hours to allow for recovery and forensic examination.

Sussex Police thanked the public for their “patience and understanding” during the closure.
