Hundreds of protesters filled the city centre with a 500-metre-long ribbon in a show of support for Palestine.

Scores of people waved Palestinian and Lebanese flags while carrying the red ribbon along streets including North Street and West Street on Saturday afternoon.

The protest comes after a similar ribbon was used to demonstrate outside the White House and in London.

Protesters gathered at The Level chanted and held placards while carrying the ribbon dubbed “the red line” through the city centre.

Police officers held back traffic while the 500-metre-long line travelled down Brighton’s Old Steine and North Street before passing the Clock Tower and filling West Street.

The ribbon made its way along the seafront to Hove Lawns where speakers rallied the crowd.

Protesters also criticised the sale of arms made in the UK to Israel after the government announced a partial ban on export licences.

The protest is the latest in a series of demonstrations which have taken place in Brighton since the October 7 attacks nearly a year ago when Hamas gunmen launched an unprecedented attack on Israel from Gaza. An Israeli military campaign has followed, which has killed thousands of Palestinians.
