People heading east back to Sussex are being warned a section of dual carriageway is closed over the weekend to allow for bridge works to be carried out.

The A27 is closed eastbound between Havant and Emsworth all this weekend, affecting journey's towards Chichester, Worthing and Brighton, National Highways said.

The closure started at 9pm on Friday and the road will reopen by 6am on Monday morning.

A spokesman said: "We’re asking drivers to avoid this section of the A27 if they can, and consider all options."

Signed diversions will be in place and drivers are reminded of the route with eastbound traffic diverted via Park Road South, Park Road North, B2149, Bartons Road, Horndean Road, Southleigh Road and Emsworth Road.

National Highways are reminding people to plan their journeys and either avoid the area around the closed section or allow extra time to complete their journeys.

Next week there will be four overnight closures on the eastbound carriageway from 9pm to 6am between Monday 23 September and Thursday 26 September.

Gemma Luckhurst, programme delivery manager for National Highways in the South East Region, said: “While closures and short term disruption are a necessary by-product to keep the strategic road network safe and in a good condition we care about the impact of our work and want to do everything we can to minimise inconvenience.”
