A large area of a Sussex seafront has been cordoned off for preliminary works to begin.

A section of the area behind Newhaven's West Beach surrounding the Boat To Box Fish and Chips has been closed off and a digger has been seen on the scene.

Lewes District Councillor for Newhaven North Sean MacLeod said it has been closed so ecological works can take place ahead of the building of a new restaurant, play park and splash area.

"Before works commence, reptiles such as the common lizard and slow worms will be moved to a safe receptor area on site before the hibernation period commences.

"Reptile hibernation season runs from October until March, depending on temperature.

"The site will soon be cordoned off to commence the important work of caring for our wildlife."

The fencing will be up now until the end of the entire project.
