Crews fought through the night to contain a fire which gutted the first floor and roof of a house.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in Harbolets Road, West Chiltington, just after 3am today.

The flames engulfed the first floor of the house and little was left of the roof. At its height, seven fire engines were at the scene.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 3.05am we were called to a domestic dwelling fire at Harbolets Road, West Chiltington.

"Joint fire control mobilised a command support unit, aerial ladder platform, an off-road vehicle and seven fire engines – two from Horsham, two from Worthing, one from Billingshurst, Petworth and Storrington to the scene.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and jets to extinguish the fire.

"Fortunately there were no injuries.

"Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service were also in attendance."

Crews have now left the scene but will return later this afternoon to inspect it and ensure the fire hotspots are fully out.
