There's a new way to experience yoga this month... with your dog.

The "doga" classes, as they have been playfully named, are held at Humankind studio in Kemp Town, Brighton, on Sundays at 4pm and are open to all.

Those taking part experience an hour-long Vinyasa flow yoga class that builds strength and flexibility, focusing on poses that are inspired by dogs’ movements.

The classes are run by creative yoga teacher Sophie Tanner. She owns an 11-year-old labrador called Ella, who has always joined her in her yoga practice. Bonding with her dog through movement inspired Sophie to train as a yoga teacher with local practitioner Anna Sugarman.

Sophie is a wellness advocate and published author who is "passionate about encouraging community and connection".

Sophie said: “Doing yoga and playing with dogs are two of my favourite things in life.

“It feels like a no-brainer to combine them for a double serotonin boost. Energetic play offers physical and mental benefits for both humans and dogs so it’s a win win.

All well-behaved, sociable dogs are welcome to doga class, along with their owners or a responsible carer.

There is a requirement that any dogs in the class be over six months old, as young puppies may find the experience too overwhelming.

People who don’t have dogs but enjoy canine company can also join the classes and experience it.

Sophie said: “We’re living in stressful times so it’s important to prioritise doing things that bring you joy and calm,

“For me, doing yoga with dogs and tapping into their happy energy is the best way to let go of any niggling anxieties and appreciate the moment. I love to watch people relax and have a laugh.”
