Thousands of cyclists are set to take on one of the country's most popular cycling events from London to Brighton - but how will this affect drivers?

Event bosses will close dozens of roads across Sussex on Sunday for the 55.2 mile ride from the capital to the coast while the event is under way.

In Brighton, motorists can expect delays coming into the city from the north and west as cyclists complete the last few miles of their route.

One of the most gruelling stretches of the route, the incline up Ditchling Beacon, will be shut off to drivers for the whole day from the bottom near Westmeston to the top where it meets Coldean Lane. This road will also be shut from 7am to 6pm.

People living in Coldean can still access their homes under guidance from stewards in Lewes Road and Park Road. Residents in Denman Place will have access through Hawkhurst Road North.

The rest of the ride makes its way into Brighton through Lewes Road and Valley Gardens, passing by the Royal Pavilion towards the Aquarium roundabout on open roads.

Madeira Drive will be closed throughout the day while cyclists cross the finish line from as early as 8.30am.

A spokesman for organisers Skyline Events said: "We would emphasise that emergency vehicles will have priority access at all times.

"If you are walking on the route, please take extra care as the road will be busy with cyclists at peak times.

"On behalf of the charities who will benefit from the funds being raised on this day, we thank you for your understanding and hope that this will require minimal adjustment to your plans for the day."

There are no other road closures in Sussex, but drivers are warned they may encounter cyclists towards Brighton on Turners Hill Road, the B2028, and B2112.

In Turners Hill, traffic will be controlled by stewards at the Turners Hill Road junction with Wallage Lane, and the crossroads by The Crown.

The last cyclists will cross the finish line in Madeira Drive at 6pm.
