Brighton and Hove prescribe the highest amounts of the weight loss jab Wegovy, according to new research.
The online pharmacy Click Pharmacy have conducted new research to find out which NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) around England prescribe the highest amounts of Wegovy jabs. Brighton and Hove came out top, with 35 prescriptions made out in June alone.
Ozempic and Wegovy, which contain an active ingredient called semaglutide, are manufactured by Novo Nordisk. Ozempic is commonly prescribed to manage diabetes. As well as helping people drop as much as 10% of their body weight, semaglutide has also recently been highlighted as a drug that could help slow down ageing and even cut the risk of cancer.
Jana Abelovska, Superintendent Pharmacist at Click Pharmacy, said: "We were interested to see which regions are prescribing these drugs the most... right now Ozempic is more frequently prescribed than Wegovy, but it’s likely that we’ll see Wegovy being prescribed more often going forward, given semaglutide’s popularity.
"Because of the ongoing semaglutide shortage, Ozempic is currently only allowed to be prescribed for diabetes rather than for off-label use for weight management."
