A city centre road has been resurfaced following a police car crash, but remains without road markings.

The Old Steine in Brighton was shut on Wednesday morning, September 4, after a police car crashed into the side of a lorry. Diesel spilled on the road during the incident.

Bus diversions were also in place while investigations and the clean up were carried out.

The road was eventually reopened yesterday, September 5, at around 1pm, after the council completed resurfacing works due to the damage.

However, the council are yet to get round to replacing the road markings.

Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport, parking and public realm, said: “Due to the diesel spill, we had to urgently resurface the road in order to make it safe.

“The road has now reopened, but we were unable to complete all of the road markings due to the heavy rain.

“We are arranging with our contractor to carry out the road markings as soon as is practical when the weather permits.”
