A woman has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a crash closed an A-road.

Sussex Police were called to the A29 Fairmile Bottom near Madehurst, north of Arundel, after two cars were involved in a crash at around 4am today.

Two people, the driver and a passenger of one of the vehicles, were taken to hospital.

A 42-year-old woman from Portsmouth, who was the driver of the other vehicle, has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She remains in custody.

The road was closed temporarily following the incident before being reopened shortly after 7am.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was also called to the scene at 4.13am.

Fire engines from Chichester and Littlehampton were sent, alongside a heavy rescue tender from Worthing.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to release two people from the vehicles and the casualties were left in the care of crews from South East Coast Ambulance Service and helicopter emergency medical services.

"Fire crews left the scene shortly after 6am.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to contact police online or call 101 quoting serial 142 of 05/09.”
