Work to "breathe new life" into a gem in the city centre has begun.

The 101-year-old Imperial Arcade in Western Road, Brighton, is set to be transformed back into an “exciting commercial space” with luxury flats above, under new plans.

The Art Deco arcade used to be a "thriving hub for footfall" but has been lined with empty shops for years.

Now, after Brighton company Moretons Investments announced in spring that it acquired the site last year, work has begun inside the building.

Fencing is up along the west side of the arcade and work is being done in the units behind it.

One retail unit has already been cleared up and it ready to let.

Residents seem largely excited about the news.

Tracy Woodhouse said: "That’s great news, like so much of Brighton it has been neglected. I, for one, am optimistic."

Michelle Collier-Self added: "It's long overdue, but hopefully worth waiting for."

Bob Marshall said: "It's so sad to see what once was a very lovely establishment get into such a run down state.

"Let's hope that things can be rectified and this once beautiful arcade can be returned to it's former glory."

Others said which shops they would like to see take up the empty retail units.

Kim Bridger said: "It would be nice to see some independent shops, a nice tea room, maybe a 1920s theme."

Tracey McMullan-Banks said an old toy shop should return. "Put Gamleys back there," she said

In April, Michael Blencowe, director of Moretons, said: “Moretons Investments are thrilled to embark on this journey and excited about the positive impact it will have on consumers and residents alike.

"We aim to breathe new life into the Imperial Arcade, making it a vibrant venue for the entire community to enjoy once again.

“Once a prime space for boutique retail, Imperial Arcade has unfortunately experienced a decline over the years. However, with Moretons Investments, a Brighton-based property investor and developer at the helm, we are eager to revitalise this piece of Brighton real estate.

"We will be collaborating with architects, planners, the council and other professionals to ensure that the Imperial Arcade undergoes a transformation that benefits the local neighbourhood."

Moretons Investments was contacted for further comment.
