A private preparatory school is joining up with a college to become a “hub of outstanding independent education”.

Great Walstead School in Lindfield near Haywards Heath will link up with Ardingly College.

The prep school's headteacher said the move was an “exciting new chapter” its history but cited issues with the “current political and financial climate” for the move.

Chris Calvey said: “This is the start of an exciting new chapter in Great Walstead’s history. Ardingly College was the obvious partner as we considered the next stage of our strategic development.

“We’re looking forward to sharing teaching best practice and continuing to go from strength to strength together, as supportive partners.”

Great Walstead said it was already in talks with Ardingly before the General Election was called but said part of its reasoning was the “imminent imposition of VAT on independent school fees”.

The move will provide “long-term stability” for Great Walstead.

Ben Figgis, head of Ardingly, said: “This partnership offers lots of mutual benefits and, above all, will ensure that our beautiful corner of West Sussex remains a hub of outstanding independent education for generations to come.”
