Several police stations across the county have shut their front desks today amid staffing shortages.

The force has shut the counters at seven police stations in Sussex - but says those looking to report a crime can just travel to another one.

Counters at Battle, Crowborough, East Grinstead, Midhurst, Rye, Seaford and Uckfield police stations will all be closed today.

Critics have called the service "a joke" and said it is a "disgrace to the taxpayers."

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the closures were due to "unforseen staff shortages."

The force added: "Members of the public wishing to contact us using the front counters will be able to do so at all other police stations which will be open as usual.

"Alternatively, information, concerns and crimes can be reported to Sussex Police online or by calling us on 101. In an emergency, call 999."

Police stations in bigger towns and cities such as Brighton, Chichester, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Lewes, Steyning and Worthing will remain open.
