Health services are experiencing high levels of demand over the bank holiday weekend.

The Sussex Health and Care Integrated Care System (ICS) has asked people to check which service they need to support busy staff.

A&E and emergency departments, including calls to 999, should only be used for life-threatening emergencies such as severe bleeding, breathing difficulties or chest pain.

People with urgent injuries or illnesses which are not life-threatening should use an urgent treatment centre, walk-in centre or minor injuries unit. Appointments can be booked via 111.

For mental health support, crisis care can be accessed through the Sussex Mental Healthline 24/7 on 08000 309 500. The ICS has also highlighted that GP surgeries are under “enormous pressure” so in some cases help can be sought through 111 or a pharmacy.

A spokesman for the Sussex ICS said: “Teams across the NHS – at GP practices, NHS 111, hospitals, mental health services, ambulance and community services – are all working incredibly hard to make sure you can receive high quality services.

“The NHS is always here to help you – but please use services wisely to make sure you get the most appropriate support and help us to help you.”
