RNLI crews were called out to two incidents at the same time on a busy bank holiday afternoon.
At 3.05pm on Sunday, the Eastbourne inshore lifeboat, David H, was launched to search for two people who were cut off by the tide under the Seven Sisters cliffs. They had sent out an iPhone SOS message.
The pair were airlifted to safety by a coastguard rescue helicopter.
Eastbourne's all-weather lifeboat, the Esme Anderson, had been requested as back up but had to be diverted to assist two people on a jetski that had suffered a mechanical issue.
They were stranded outside the Sovereign Harbour entrance in Eastbourne.

The RNLI said the conditions were difficult but the all-weather lifeboat managed to establish a tow and take the pair back to safety.
