Police dealing with an unauthorised encampment in a supermarket car park arrested a teenage boy for being in possession of a firearm.
A group of caravans set up camp in the Hove Tesco car park in Church Road on Thursday afternoon, taking over dozens of parking spaces.
Supermarket bosses employed private security guards to stand at the entrance and police were called on several occasions to reports of antisocial behaviour.
The car park and nearby shopping precinct in George Street were swarming with armed police at around 8pm.
Officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm.
A spokesman for the force said: "A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm after being with a BB gun. He remains in custody at this time.
"The group has now left the area. Sussex Police will continue to engage with relevant partners."
