Smoke is billowing across the city from a fire next to a television transmitting tower.

Firefighters are tackling the blaze in a derelict building next to the tower, which provides signal to homes in Brighton and beyond.

Three fire engines and a ladder truck are on the scene after the building was engulfed by flames earlier this evening.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 7.33pm to a fire on Whitehawk Hill road in Brighton.

"The building is well alight and hose reel jet is in use. There are no casualties."

Smoke was seen from across the city including from Portslade to Woodingdean.

In nearby Whitehawk, roads are flooded with the grey clouds while firefighters work to put out the flames.

The transmitting station provides Freeview television to hundreds of thousands of homes including BBC and ITV channels along with local radio stations.

The fire service confirmed the transmitter building is not involved in the incident.
