A warning has been issued to people walking over "extremely dangerous" mudflats.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team were called to Medmerry Harbour near Seal Bay, Chichester, on Friday shortly before 5pm after a group were spotted walking on the mudflats.

The mudflats, which are coastal wetlands that form when mud is left behind by tides or rivers, are considered dangerous as the mud can sink, leaving people at risk of becoming trapped.

The group were unharmed. However they were given safety advice on why not to walk over the mudflats again.

A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Not only are the mud flats extremely dangerous to be walking out on, this area is also a restricted area due to it being a nature reserve.

"Please stick to the paths and if you see anyone in danger or in trouble along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

"Mud sticks - never try to walk out on mudflats as you may become stuck, if you or your pets become stuck, stop others from trying to help you on the mud as they could become stuck too.

"Instead get them to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard and wait for help to arrive."
