An arson investigation has been launched after a person was seen entering a building site shortly before a shipping container fire.
Sussex Police said that someone was seen entering the construction site in Stone Cross near Eastbourne shortly after midnight - minutes before smoke billowed from two shipping containers on the site.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue crews extinguished the fires in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police are now investigating the fires as suspected arson.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Police were called to a report of a person entering a construction site in Pickens Wood, Stone Cross, shortly after midnight on Saturday, August 17.
"Officers attended and found a fire in a shipping container on the property.
"East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fire and several searches of the area were undertaken to locate any people or reasonable lines of enquiry.
"Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious around that time is asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting serial 017 of 17/08."
Fire crews battled the fires in two shipping containers in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident was scaled back in the hours following the fire and crews left the scene shortly after 2am.
No injuries were reported.
