The fire, which was caused by rubbish catching alight, was put out by one main jet and two hose reel jets.
Fire crews wore breathing apparatus and people were urged to close windows and doors to avoid inhaling the smoke.
People from the town also reported smelling burning rubber.
The road was closed by Sussex Police for a number of hours as members of the public were advised to avoid the area.
A spokesman for the fire service has since confirmed the cause of the fire was accidental, with crews leaving the scene at around 6.50pm after extinguishing the flames and damping down the area.
No injuries were reported during the incident and the fire only impacted outdoor structures.
