A six-storey block of flats will be built despite dozens of objections.

Brighton and Hove City Council approved plans on Monday for Orchard Holdings Hove Ltd to build 42 new homes in Orchard Gardens, Hove.

The building will replace Portslade Panelworks and will have a basement car park for residents with 25 spaces.

It will have two commercial units on the ground floor and a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes spread out across the rest of the building.

Each flat will have its own private balcony or outdoor area, with a shared courtyard for residents to use.

Before the plans were approved, the council were hit with dozens of written objections over the proposals.

One person wrote: "As a frequent visitor to this street, I strongly object to this proposal.

"This residential street would be overwhelmed by the excessive height of the proposed building and the increased motor traffic that would ensue would affect access for residents and disturb their enjoyment of a quiet family street.

"The increased traffic would increase pollution and pose a danger to the many children who live here."

Another person said: "A block of flats is completely out of keeping with the residential street this is on and will very likely have a detrimental effect on property value due to overdevelopment, crowding and extra traffic in what is currently a safe, quiet few streets for families to live on.

"The traffic and road infrastructure is not there and we are in such an over-developed stretch of road as it is with the massive amount of flats that are currently being built nearby."

One Hove resident said the development will also deprive residents in the area of their privacy as it will overshadow a number of homes.

They wrote: "The development of this block is not appropriate on this site immediately adjacent to 1930's homes.

"This will dramatically increase traffic on an already busy major junction on the Old Shoreham Road and Nevill Road, increasing noise and pollution.

"The height of the development will completely overshadow the homes of those living adjacent and deprive them of privacy and light.

"The overdevelopment of this site is totally inappropriate and would cause huge disruption, noise, dust to those living adjacent and access to the site by heavy machinery, vehicles etc is not going to be possible without severely affecting those living adjacent."
