A teenager suffered facial injuries after being attacked in an underpass following Pirate Day celebrations.

The teen and a group of young people were walking back from the annual seaside celebration when they were attacked in the early hours of the morning without warning by another group of young people.

Police are investigating the assault and are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the group of young people were through the underpass near Wellington Place, Hastings, at around 1am on Monday, July 22.

While heading towards the New Town area, they were attacked by a larger group of young people and approached without warning.

A 19-year-old man suffered facial fractures.

The force said: "Officers are investigating and want any witnesses to come forward.

"It includes anyone who may have been in the area at the time, anyone in the area with CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage, and anyone who saw what happened.

"Information can be reported to Sussex Police online or on 101 by quoting serial 251 of 22/07."

Pirates Day celebrations take place annually in Hastings and include a large parade through the town as well as live music and other nautical-themed attractions.
