Motorists using a busy A-road will face almost a month of diversions.
London Road in Battle closed on Monday for reconstruction works to begin and will remain closed day and night until August 30.
East Sussex County Council and Balfour Beatty, which is working in partnership with the highways team, said the aim is to improve the road and install new drainage systems.

Highway teams will be working at the site from 8am until 5pm each day, with the closure set to stay in place 24 hours a day.
Access to residents will be restricted and anyone needing vehicle access into the area will need to be escorted by site marshals.
A diversion will be in place for 25 days and will take motorists via High Street, Upper Lake, Lower Lake, Battle Hill, Hastings Road, Battle Road, The Ridge West, Junction Road, Sedlescombe Road North, Ebden’s Hill, Kent Street, Whydown Hill, Woodmans Green Road and Vinehall Road.
The diversion will be in place in both directions and will apply to all motorists including affected bus routes.
East Sussex County Council has said that residents could experience a temporary disturbance as there is likely to be noise, flashing lights and reversing sirens.

A spokesman for the council said: "We will be carrying out reconstruction works on London Road, Battle following recent subsidence.
"Works will take place from Monday 5 August to Friday 30 August.
"The road will be closed for 24 hours each day to allow the required curing time for materials, however the team will be on site between 8am and 5pm each day.
"We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network."
