Pet owners are being warned that they could face fines of up to £1,000 for not cleaning up dog mess.

Lewes District Council said there are a small minority of owners in the area who are not picking up after their dogs.

A warning has now been issued with the authority pointing out the mess is both unpleasant and dangerous.

A council spokesman said: "We're lucky to have so many adorable dogs and responsible dog owners in the district.

"There is however a small minority of owners who sometimes forget they are required by law to pick up after their dog.

"There are simply no excuses for not picking up after your dog. Dog fouling is not only deeply unpleasant, it is dangerous.

"Contact with dog excrement can cause toxocariasis – a nasty infection that can lead to dizziness, nausea, asthma and even blindness or seizures.

"Our Neighbourhood First officers are out working across the district every day and have powers of enforcement under the Dog Fouling Public Spaces Protection Order in place."
