A three-year-old child who went missing on a popular beach was found yesterday as safety advice is issued.
Selsey Coastguard Rescue team has reported that a three-year-old child went missing at West Wittering beach yesterday, August 2, at around 3pm.
Sussex Police, Hayling Coastguard team and two Hayling lifeboats also assisted lifeguards with the search.
The child was found safe and well two miles from where they were last seen walking on the beach, the coastguard team said.
A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard said: “We would like to remind everyone that all children should be supervised at all times, especially when visiting the beach.
“The child was then brought back to the lifeguard tower and reunited with parents.”
It comes as a total of 42 children were reported missing from West Wittering beach in just one day in July.
The coastguard team has issued advice via social media on keeping children safe on the beach.
Parents should agree on a meeting point, take a photo of the child on the day, write contact details on the child’s wrist, use a wristband scheme and stay close and be alert when taking a trip.
The spokesman added: “The lifeguards and staff at West Wittering Beach work extremely hard to keep everyone safe while visiting the beach.
“Please help them by supervising your children at all times and following the above safety advice.
“In an emergency out at sea, along the coast and on the beach, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
