More than ten tonnes of waste was left on Brighton’s seafront last weekend and councillors are urging visitors to keep the city clean ahead of Pride.

Brighton and Hove City Council said it will have extra bin collectors and litter pickers on the street this weekend as the city gears up for hundreds of thousands of people arriving for the celebrations.

It said residents need to “do their bit” to keep the city clean during the busiest weekends of the summer.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Our teams work really hard to keep the city clean every week but we as residents need to do our bit to help keep Brighton and Hove tidy.

“Keeping the city clean during and after Pride is an absolutely huge task. We’re preparing well for this weekend with extra staff collecting bins, sweeping, litter picking and jet washing. They’ll be plenty of bins available too, so please use them – and if the bin is full, find another or take your litter home.

“It’s fantastic to see people are out enjoying sunny weekends, but it’s disappointing to see increasing volumes of waste across the city and particularly on the beach.

“Last weekend council teams picked up around ten tonnes of waste from the seafront and the lawns – far more than we ever used to see.”

Brighton is currently gearing up for Pride events all across this weekend including the Fabuloso concert in Preston Park, Pride Village Party in St James’ Street and parade heading down the seafront, North Street and the Old Steine.

In North Street, parts of the pavement are once again stained by red paint after what appears to be balloons were thrown at the Barclays bank building, spattering over the floor.

More than 70 extra rubbish bins will be placed around the city and 50 extra bins will be added around the parade route.

Environmental enforcement officers will be patrolling the city handing out £150 fines for anyone caught dropping litter.

Extra street cleaning teams and sweepers will be working in the city centre and on the seafront.
