A pothole-ridden road blamed for near-miss accidents involving school children is finally going to be repaired.

Kingston Lane in Shoreham will be closed between Ashcroft Close and the A270 from August 19 for four days.

Work will be carried out between the hours of 9.30am and 4.30pm and will involve resurfacing the road, replacing road markings and adjusting iron work.

During this time, the road will be fully closed to motorists with a diversion in place.

Street parking will be suspended and a pedestrian barrier will be put in place.

Residents in the area have been warned about the work in a letter sent by West Sussex County Council this week.

The news was met with relief from people in the town as the road has been a cause of concern for some time.

Parents have said the condition of the road over the past few months has put children in danger. Dipping headlights from cars as they go over the potholes misleads youngsters into thinking drivers are flashing to let them cross over.

In April, the then MP for Adur and Worthing Tim Loughton called on West Sussex County Council to repair the road after hearing about these concerns.

He said: "Some parents came to see me the other day because when cars have their headlights on, they come along, bounce up and down (on the potholes) and people think they are flashing their lights to let them go when they're not, so we've had some near-miss accidents.

"The state of the potholes here is really bad so I've messaged the county council about it."

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “Large-scale patching of the road surface in Kingston Lane, between Cross Road and the entrance to the Shoreham Academy, is scheduled to be carried out between 19 and 23 August.

"Please note that these dates are provisional and subject to unforeseen circumstances, such as extreme weather.

"Separate to this, there will be smaller, localised pothole repairs at the junctions with Meadway Court, Clarendon Road and Cross Road."
