Brighton and Hove City Council has now confirmed no staff or passengers were injured, but the railway might not reopen tomorrow depending on the outcome of safety checks.

Councillor Mitchie Alexander, acting cabinet member for culture, heritage and tourism, said: "We can confirm one of our Volk's Railway trains was partially derailed earlier today. This happened at very low speed and no staff or passengers were injured.

"We are currently investigating the cause and will soon return the train to the shed for further inspection. Once this has been possible, we will repair any damage to the track."

Cllr Alexander added: "We hope to have a full service in operation tomorrow but obviously we will not reopen the railway until we are certain it is safe to do so."
