A mum-of-two is thrilled her petition to turn on the splash pad at a park has been successful.

Eloise Turner started the campaign to get the splash pad in Princes Park, Eastbourne, turned on after the council confirmed it could not afford to have it on this summer.

Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) said it costs £25,000 a year to run the site.

Eloise, who visits the park with her children regularly, started the petition on Change.org and garnered more than 1,000 signatures from concerned parents who said the play facility is a "lifesaver".

She told The Argus: "I am so thrilled it is back on.

"The town really came together and I am so grateful to the Friends of Eastbourne Seafront and everyone who signed my petition.

The splash pad at the park in Channel View Road was saved by Best Demolition, a demolition business in Heathfield, whose owners came forward to sponsor its running costs for the rest of the summer holidays. This is a one-off arrangement for 2024.

A spokesman from Best Demolition said: “The team is delighted to be helping the summer holidays to go with a splash for local children.”

“I would like to thank Best Demolition for providing support this year," said Councillor Stephen Holt, leader of Eastbourne Borough Council.

“We are dealing with huge financial challenges currently due to unprecedented levels of homelessness and the associated costs of temporary accommodation, making external sponsorship for the splash pad absolutely key to getting it open again.

“Whilst I am delighted that due to the support of our community, we have been able to open this free facility this year, we need to work together to find a long-term solution to secure its future."

Josh Babarinde, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastbourne, said: “After the council, the community and I made public appeals to our local businesses to support with the funding of our much-loved splash pad, I’m so pleased that Best Demolition has stepped up to help get it re-open again.

“This is Eastbourne at its best - our town coming together to support and protect our community.”
