The coastguard was first paged to Worthing Beach near the Splash Point leisure centre at 4.39am after receiving reports of two people in the water.
Police, paramedics and the Shoreham lifeboat all made their way to the scene to assist with the search, which lasted for over one hour but nobody was found.
A spokesman for Shoreham Coastguard said: "It was established that no further persons were in the water or surrounding area that required assistance and all assets stood down"
