People across the county have been urged to donate blood after a national shortage.

NHS Blood Donation said the UK is on amber alert after stocks of O type blood have dropped.

It comes after a recent cyber attack on a hospital in London and unfilled appointments at donor centres across the country.

To help get blood stocks back up, NHS Sussex has now urged people to donate if they can.

A spokesman for the organisation said: "Please consider donating blood, particularly if you are an O group donor."

People who want to donate can make an appointment by calling 0300 123 23 23 or visiting https://my.blood.co.uk/.

A spokesman for NHS Blood Donation said: "The NHS urgently needs O type blood donors. O negative blood can be given to anyone.

"There are over 12,000 appointments available over the next two weeks, and we really need to get them filled.

"We know how amazing our donors are, and we need your help to make this possible. "
