A top DJ has hit back at claims Brighton is full of "druggy ravers" ahead of a headline gig on the beach.

Carl Cox scorned musician Abigail Burrowes after she told him to stay in Barcelona instead of performing at the On The Beach festival on Saturday - amid fears he would "mess up" the town with "noise pollution and druggy ravers."

His blunt response on Facebook has since been viewed by thousands of people supporting him - even causing Abigail to admit she is not from Brighton.

The DJ was in the Spanish coastal city to celebrate his sister Pamela's 60th birthday and made a post on his Facebook page to mark the occasion.

But it was not long before Abigail commented. She said: "Dear Carl Cox. Please stay there and don’t come to Brighton next week and mess up my town with your noise pollution and druggy ravers.

"Brighton has more than enough of those unfortunates already. Thanks you."

Carl's blunt comeback was liked by more than 420 people. He said: " I am sorry, I cannot do that. Thank you."

Despite Carl's response Abigail continued. "I am not PLAYING," she said. Carl then joked "I know. I did the line up."

Carl's fans also took part in the discourse saying they loved his "music and passion" - and that "true Brightonians love a rave".

One even added: "I suggest you move to Eastbourne. It's known as God's waiting room, you would love it."

Abigail revealed she was not from Brighton but owned a property in the city.

The musician, who has around 109 monthly listeners on streaming platform Spotify, criticised Carl's "insipid non-music fuelled by the drug industry"  and said he has a chance to save young people from taking this as the norm.

After a back-and-forth between Abigail and Carl, he closed the discussion with: "I am happy for you, music is about bringing people together in a positive way, and that is it. Can we now just move on."

He added: "I am already a good guy, but this makes for good reading. I know my music and where I came from. Thank you."
