A public lido is welcoming dogs for swimming sessions in September.

Saltdean Lido, in Brighton, is hosting 15 sessions for four-legged doggy-paddlers throughout the month of September and the beginning of October.

The lido’s ‘Dogtember’ event will begin on the weekend of September 14, with 90 minute sessions for pups at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, or a 60 minute quiet session at 5pm, which is limited to 50 dogs, every Saturday and Sunday.

Furry guests can enjoy the lido’s 40 metre heated pool, or the “gently-sloping splash pool” for more nervous swimmers, as well as slides, water spouts and surrounding grass.

The lido is also offering a drying service and a range of stalls at the sessions.

Dog owners can also join their pooches for the sessions, although a swim ticket will need to be purchased. Owners supervising will need to buy a spectator ticket.

Sessions will be held on September 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29, October 5 and 6 with tickets available for purchase here.

Ticket holders will also receive free parking.

A spokesman for Saltdean Lido said: “Once you’re through the gate, you can let your Humans off their lead and run, jump, slide, swim and splash to your heart’s content within our secure site.

“If you’re not confident diving straight into our 40 metre heated pool, you also have access to the gently-sloping splash pool with a slide and water spouts and there’s lots of grass to run around on if you have any energy left for zoomies.

“This event is a fundraiser run by volunteers but of course, with professional lifeguards, vet advice thanks to our friends at The Mewes Vets and dog first-aiders on site."

XL Bullies will not be allowed at the sessions.

The spokesman added: “We've taken expert advice on the issue of XL Bullies and have concluded that it would be unfair to the dogs if they had to be on a lead, which is the law, while every dog else could run free.

“We're also advised that it would be unsafe for any dog to try to swim whilst muzzled, so heart-breaking though it is, we have to exclude them.”
