The fire service has launched a campaign about wildfires due to the increased summer risk.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) is urging communities to be “wildfire ready” for the summer holidays.

The risk of wildfires increases during dry summer months and, as such, the fire service is asking people to take care and heed advice.

The emergency service met with Ashdown Forest Rangers earlier this year to discuss land management to reduce the risk of wildfires and is urging landowners to take precautions.

The fire service is also running a ‘pack a picnic’ competition to deter the use of barbecues, with the winner receiving a picnic backpack.

To take part, visit the competition link and submit an answer to a multiple choice question before midnight on July 28.

A winner will be selected at random on July 29.

Trevor Funnell, station manager and ESFRS wildfire lead, said: “Wildfires are unpredictable, can spread quickly, and have a devastating impact on homes, land, wildlife, businesses and the community.

“We want people to enjoy East Sussex's beautiful surroundings, so it’s crucial to take precautions and assess your home, business or land for risks.

“We want people to enjoy the summer but enjoy it safely. By working together we can help reduce the risk of wildfires and fires in the open”.
