Police swarmed a town centre following reports of a firearms incident.

Sussex Police attended High Street in Lewes on the afternoon of Friday, July 19, after receiving a report of a man waving a firearm at a person.

A witness working at the White Hart Hotel in High Street at the time reported that police were "everywhere", some in plain clothes, with cars up and down the road.

A 57-year-old man from Hove was apprehended by officers and arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

An imitation firearm was seized by police nearby and no one was harmed during the incident.

The man has since been released on conditional bail while further enquiries are made, Sussex Police said.
