Firefighters wowed crowds with impressive displays at an open day.

Crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service showed visitors to the Worthing Fire Station Open Day today what can happen to plastic when it is exposed to fire.

They also showed onlookers, including families and young children, a display of a chip pan fire.

Impressive though it was, crews used the displays to announce important messages around fire safety.

They reminded audiences to check their smoke alarms once a week and in the event of a fire at home to remember the key safety advice: "Get out, stay out and call 999."

In another display, they showed visitors how they help police when called to the scene of car crashes.

The event coincides with the annual Broadwater Carnival at the neighbouring Broadwater Green.

Each year, the event raises thousands for charity.

A spokesman for Broadwater Carnival said: "We invite charities and good causes each year to be considered for a donation from funds raised. Due to the generosity of our community and sponsors we have been able to raise around £10,000 per year."

At the event from 10am to 4pm today, there were around 150 stalls from charities, local groups and businesses to highlight their services.
