A church rector climbed a 15th century steeple to fundraise for repairs.

Father Steven Emerson, rector of St Andrew's, West Tarring, climbed the steeple of the 13th century church on Friday morning as part of fundraising efforts for recent repairs to its walls.

Two sides of St Andrew’s Church were recently re-shingled in cedarwood, costing £30,000, all of which was covered by church funds.

The rector took on the 150ft climb in his dog collar and brogues to replenish these funds, making him the first rector to climb the steeple in 1,000 years.

Father Steven said: “I’m used to mountaineering and climbing rock faces but I’ve never climbed a ladder that high before.

“I was expecting to find the top section intimidating but once I got going it was great fun and amazing to be up high above Worthing and enjoy the incredible views.
