Food waste bins are set to come to Worthing and Adur with weekly collections in two years.

Adur District Council and Worthing Borough Council have announced that food waste bins will come to their areas in 2026.

A phased rollout of the kerbside service will launch in March 2026 after the two councils experienced difficulties with obtaining funding from the central government.

Households will receive a seven-litre caddy to keep in the kitchen and a 23-litre food waste caddy to leave on the kerb on their weekly collection day.

People living in flats will also receive a seven-litre caddy, while a 140-litre food waste bin will be placed in communal stores.

In March, a review of the allocated funding from the government was requested as it fell short of what was required by £900,000.

Additional funding of £227,000 has now been awarded, although the councils say this still isn’t enough.

The rollout of the waste collection service will be phased until more funding is acquired.

The councils, which reported that food waste makes up approximately 39.5% of the content of a household bin in Adur and 40.6% in Worthing, also require ten new 7.5-tonne vehicles for the service, two of which will be electric.

Adur District Councillor Jude Harvey, cabinet member for the environment and leisure, said: “Alongside our initiatives to prevent waste in the first place, the introduction of a weekly food waste service will go a long way towards reducing the amount of food that ends up in landfill, and will help us boost our recycling rates.”

Worthing Borough Councillor Councillor Vicki Wells, cabinet member for environmental services, said: “Food waste collections have been a priority for residents and the administration for over two years.

“Although the council has secured enough funding for a phased service, I am very disappointed that we can't afford to roll out the scheme in its entirety.

“I will continue pressing for increased community composting schemes to follow the success at Victoria Park and also press for alternative fuelled vehicles, ensuring we future proof our waste fleet for the environment.”
