People clapped and cheered as firefighters rescued a pigeon.

West Street in Brighton had to be closed while emergency services dealt with the bird, which was entangled in nets on top of 19 Boyce's Street.

A crowd gathered to watch the drama unfold and onlookers cheered when the pigeon was eventually freed - with one passerby describing the scene as "heartwarming".

A city centre road had to be closed while a pigeon was rescued (Liban Elmi)The pigeon, who was handed into the care of Brighton and Hove Wildlife Rescue, came away largely unscathed with minor injuries to its wings.

A fire service spokesman said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called at 6.43pm to reports of a trapped animal on West Street, Brighton.

"One appliance and an aerial ladder platform were in attendance. Crews use small cutting equipment to free a trapped pigeon from netting.”
