An ambulance was called and the coastguard team, along with the Selsey Inshore Lifeboat crew, gave pain relief before paramedics arrived.

The casualty was carried up the beach on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: "We would like to remind everyone to adhere to the signage saying to keep off the rock armour.

"The rock armour is extremely dangerous, it can be very slippery and there are some very large, and very deep drops between the rocks.

"Do not jump or dive off the rock armour as rocks may also be hidden from view under the water which could cause serious injury."
