At the mouth of a meandering river is a beautiful beach that is under threat.

As one of the most photographed views in Sussex, it is no surprise that Argus Camera Club snappers enjoy getting out to take pictures of Cuckmere Haven.

The quiet pebble beach and vast white cliffs, as well as the meandering Cuckmere River where wild ponies graze, make for impressive views.

The image of the coastguard cottages looking out to the Seven Sisters is well known, but Philip Carter snapped them from a different perspective.

Looking towards the cottages from the east, you can see how the cliffs beneath the cottages are eroding.

The four cottages, built shortly after the National Coastguard Service was founded in 1822, are now more than 30 metres closer to the cliff edge than when they were built.

Campaigners have set up Cuckmere Haven SOS (CHSOS), a charitable incorporated organisation, to help protect the beach and cottages from the threat of coastal erosion.

A spokesman for CHSOS said: "Behind the picturesque and photographed view the defences are crumbling and the situation becomes ever more dire which each passing tide."
