Twins who have lived on the same road for more than 20 years are celebrating their 90th birthday today.

Peg Maskell and Pat Mankcelow celebrated their milestone birthday and had an “absolutely lovely time” on Saturday at the Willingdon Golf Club in Eastbourne with around 50 friends and family members.

They celebrated with their five children, 10 grandchildren and an increasing number of great-grandchildren.

The twins were born in 1934 in London and evacuated the city during the Second World War to Leicester at the tender age of five. They have lived in and around London during their lifetime, having both started their own families in Tooting – then eventually settling in rural Polegate.

They both worked in the health service when they lived in London – another thing that they shared in common, however chose to have their own friendship circles.

Wendy Small, Pat’s daughter, has fond memories of her auntie and mother: “Every year at Christmas we basically had two Christmases, one at auntie Peggy’s and one at my mums on Boxing Day.

We’d swap round every year, and it was always just such a fun time. We’d have the roast dinner on Christmas Day, but surely enough we’d end up having a second on the Boxing Day.”

Peg made the initial move to Sussex with her own family, Pat then followed suit roughly a decade later, after having lived in Crystal Palace, and have lived on the same road ever since.

Wendy added, “It’s lovely really, they live right by each other and see each other all the time. They have their own friend circles, but they are as close as can be.

“The birthday party was so nice – To see all the family and friends there, and to just see the twins full of life and thriving was a joy. They show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.”
