Multi-million pound plans for a new theatre space are set to become a reality after they were approved for construction.

Chichester District Council gave the green light to the city's Festival Theatre to build a 120-seat studio within its grounds with hopes it will be used for fresh talent and innovative performances.

Fundraising has started and the bid is being backed by director Sir Sam Mendes.

The versatile space, called The Nest, will be in a space between the main Festival Theatre and Northgate Car Park and will offer technicians, performers and community groups a space to hone their skills at the start of their careers.

Artistic and executive directors of the Chichester Festival Theatre Justin Audibert and Kathy Bourne both said they were "thrilled" to see the plans approved by the council in what they say could be a "real opportunity to enhance Chichester's nightlife."

The core of the new building will be formed from an existing temporary structure already used for events in London and Edinburgh.

It will have a stage inside and removable stacked seating so the performance space can change shapes depending on the production.

Fundraising efforts are under way to make sure the project can be completed - and a Hollywood director has even backed the campaign.

Sarah Mansell, appeal director, said: "We know audiences and visitors have a real appetite for smaller, more informal theatre spaces.

"We have an ambitious fundraising goal of at least £1.5 million to ensure The Nest meets the highest standards of excellence and accessibility, and are very grateful to all those who have donated so far."

The film director said: "Nurturing the next generation of artists is vital to ensure that theatre in the UK maintains its international reputation for excellence.

"I am delighted to support Chichester Festival Theatre – a place dear to my heart – as they embark on creating this exciting new space. I cannot wait to see the work that is incubated in The Nest’.

Theatre bosses have set a goal of March 2025 to raise the £1.5 million needed to make the plans a reality, setting aside £250,000 from their own funding reserves to kickstart the campaign.
