A man has been charged after people were sexually assaulted, harassed and threatened in a pub.

Sussex Police were alerted to reports of disturbances at Frogshole Farm pub in Maidenbower Drive, Crawley, on June 30.

Shamrez Akhtar, 44, was arrested the same night on suspicion of sexual assault, making threats and racial harassment and was released under investigation.

The police were again alerted a week later to women being subjected to sexualised comments by a man in Three Bridges.

Akhtar was arrested for a second time on July 10 and charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of common assault, racially aggravated harassment, using threatening/insulting language and making threats to commit criminal damage.

Akhtar was remanded in custody at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on July 11 ahead of his next appearance on August 8.

Detective Chief Inspector Pauline Lane said: "No one should ever have to tolerate sexual assault, racial harassment, or any form of crime in our community.

"We are unwavering in our commitment to enhancing safety and protecting the public, rigorously investigating all reports to make Crawley a safer and more welcoming place for everyone."
